Duplicate Link Checking

The worse thing about running any sort of link directory or list is that webmasters lose enthusiasm when the money doesn't roll in and give up renewing their domain, or paying for hosting.

For those of us linking to URLs around the web, this results in a lot of dead links.

If our own sites are not to be seen as dead, we need to weed out the 404s.

I therefore believe some sort of link checking needs to be implemented.

I currently use http://www.linkalarm.com/ but there are plenty of other services. There's even a wordpress plugin for such a job.

404 ( dead member sites ) can be easily handled via the delete inactive sites feature ( in 0.7 this is changed to make them inactive - not visible on the list ). Implementing link checking would properbly way to server unfriendly for 95% of topsite hosters.

yup check the admin for "delete inactive sites" settings, as Basti mentioned this setting has been evolved in 0.7 to set these to inactive. We can look at adding a plugin with that does a check to only the inactive sites in the future to help automate the removal of dead sites.
