Just tried setting up mod_gzip ( for apache 1.3.x ) , but itsnt enabled as well, so yes, basicly on 1and1 shared hosting we will need to have the headers.php + php.ini change addition

very interresting, i personnaly use GZIP compression for a long time :

cant seem to get this to work with 1and1 on my end, followed instructions but throws this error.

Any way i can get this to work? Or is there something else 1and1 users do?

If i remember right mod_deflate isnt enabled on 1and1 shared hostings
