Do non-friendly links work off site?

I didn't think they did but...

I have a member that changed her URL. She hasn't updated it on my visiolist yet but is using the unfriendly link code because she has an https URL. So her current/new URL is https://newweb.com but https://oldweb.com is what I have in my records. Her voting button still works! I thought the registered domain had to be the same as the referral domain for the gateway page to work... or does using the non-friendly link code work off site as well?

I think this question can only answer Mark or Basti, it's better to wait for them.

Some of the users might have used direct voting link example:
website.com/index.php?a=in&u=USERNAME

Thank you cajkan, yes that's the link. That's the link my https members need to use. I had tested that on other sites and it didn't trigger the gateway for me so I assumed direct or home page both had to come from the registered URL to count.
